While the jungle cat is a fairly widespread species in India, it's essential to note that their habitat preferences often include grasslands, wetlands, and scrublands.

Jungle Cat

The jungle cat is a medium-sized wild cat native to a vast area spanning from the Middle East to Southeast Asia. Despite its name, it's more commonly found in wetlands, reed beds, and grasslands than in dense jungles.   

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: Larger than a domestic cat with long legs.   
  • Coat: Typically sandy, reddish-brown, or grey, without spots.   
  • Tail: Relatively short with dark rings and a black tip.   

Habitat

  • Prefers wetlands, reed beds, grasslands, and riverine areas.
  • Can adapt to various habitats, including arid regions and agricultural lands. 


Diet

  • Carnivorous, primarily feeding on rodents, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. 
  • May also prey on fish and insects.
